I had a strange thing happen with Richard's delivery...or rather, something strange that caused labor...I was almost 35 weeks pregnant, and one evening started having severe pain in my side. It wouldn't go away when I went to bed, but got worse and spread up my side, in my ribs (they felt like they were on fire if I touched them) up to my shoulder, across my back and down my other side. It was SO strange. It was unrelenting pain--constant, and Tylenol didn't help at ALL. The next morning we went to see our doctor, and the pain got even worse while I was there...I couldn't lie down or sit up straight in a chair! Our doctor sent us to the ER, and there they did some tests, ultrasounds, etc...but every test came back negative...which is great, except nobody could figure out the pain! While I was in the ER, I started going into labor from the intense pain (??). (They were not labor pains, but it caused labor.) Because I was just shy of 35 weeks pregnant, they made the decision to airlift me to a bigger hospital in Spokane, WA, which is a 2-hour drive from Moscow. Apart from being in pain, the helicoptor ride (30 minutes) was sort of fun! :) They had given me an IV with some pain medication, and that took the edge off. In Spokane they did more tests..all of them were negative except for the amniocentesis (which I would never do if it were earlier in the pregnancy because of the risk of hurting the baby or provoking labor...) That test showed there was probably an infection in the uterus which was causing pain and also labor. So they gave me some pitocin and an epidural and some pain medication, and I went to sleep (the pain was only a tiny bit better all night...miserable, but at least I slept)...the next morning at 5 AM, I felt my water break, and about an hour later, Richard Allyn Beauchamp II was born! He weighed 7 lb 5 oz, which is big for a preemie! The took him up to the NICU to get some oxygen, and they said he aspirated some blood during delivery, and that caused a small infection in his lungs, so they had to give him an antibiotic, and also a surfactant to help his lungs out since he was born too early. But he got better really fast! After a week he had all the oxygen and tubes gone, and they just wanted to make sure he was eating enough to go home. That took another week.
I was in the hospital for another 3 days because the strange upper body pains kept on after I delivered...they gave me more antibiotics, and pain medication, and told me to rest, and it gradually got better! They think I must have had placental abruption that caused an infection in the uterus, but they never could find out for sure! I am just glad it's gone! :) Praise God for a healthy little boy! He's such a cuddler--I love it! :)

The space is wonderful--I drove Dave's little Corolla around while I was pregnant with Shannon (and my belly was bigger with Shannon than with this one!) and it was so difficult to lower myself into the driver's side and squeeze behind the wheel! I love how easy it is to get car seats and strollers in and out of the Caravan!

I was so thrilled when we got this BOB "suv" jogging stroller for 40.00 from a couple that was moving away and selling most of their stuff. I highly recommend this stroller for anyone wanting a mid-sized, super comfy jogging stroller! This one was at least 4 years old, and is still like new!

Dave had fun taking some pictures of Shannon last week. This whole week we've hardly slept at night due to Shannon having a really bad cold/cough. We were up about every 15 minutes one night, and every 2 hours for the past 3 days. :( We turned the shower on hot and just sat in the bathroom with her so the steam would help her congestion. She coughed so hard at times it made her throw up if I had just nursed her! Poor baby! :( It just broke my heart to see her suffering. I'm so glad she's better today! Still coughing, but no more fever, and she is very responsive again! Yay! Anyway...here is a fun photo Dave took. For those of you who don't know, Dave is quite a good photographer--more of landscape than people, but he's getting talented with Shannon! :)

The top photo is Shannon a couple days old on her "bilibed" for jaundice. We had a little bed here at home that fit right into her bassinet--I was grateful for the large size of that bassinet for the first time since buying it! :)

Shannon looks so tiny, and those first couple weeks were such a surreal whirlwind time! I was in awe the whole time though...and the fact that she was on the "bilibed" all the time except when I was feeding or changing her, it made me look forward to those every-two-hour feedings! (We were supposed to feed her as much as possible to flush out the bad stuff from her liver...) And it sure worked! She pooped and wet her diaper 1-2 times per feeding. :) We went through SO many diapers those first couple weeks!! I am so grateful for disposable diapers!!

Here is our little munchkin..Shannon Louise Beauchamp: 8 lb, 4oz, 20.5 in. long. Born at 3:51 PM, Saturday, January 26th, 2008!

This is not the best picture, but I will be posting more later. She was still a bit puffy here. This is one of the pics the birthing center took. She has a full head of wavy black hair! She is one of the sweetest babies ever! We will see if her temperment remains as sweet once she is past the newborn stage :)...she really has been a little trooper though, so far. She had a touch of jaundice that developed after we were home, so they have her on a "bilibed" here at our home for hopefully only a couple days. She has to be on it constantly except for nursing...no cuddly time! It has made nursing a little less painful though--I get my cuddly time with her that way. :)

I had the best crew ever for the delivery! My wonderful husband, my mom, my sister--all the way from France!, my sister-in-law Kristin...and my Daddy was even in the room, over on the couch, for when she was actually born! Dr. Trinh was wonderful, as well as Katie, the nurse, and all the other wonderful nurses that took care of me. It was pretty funny--as the end got near, I had all these faces peering around me and counting--Dave was yelling it in my ear.."1!, 2!, 3!, 4!...etc" but it actually is what really helped me focus at the very end when I was feeling faint and absolutely exhausted. And oh! what joy when I had her on my chest for the first time! She was so beautiful, and was crying till she was put on me...then she calmed immediately. *sigh* BLISS!

Waters Broke at 2:00 AM...12 hours later we have a Baby!!

We had Pride and Prejudice (the good long version :)) playing during labor...it was soothing to me, and provided a bit of distraction between contractions. After being dilated to 5 for a while, I was so exhausted! I decided to go for the epidural. What relief! The rest of the time was pleasant--until the pushing! Shannon was two and a half weeks early, and ended up weighing 8 lb, 4 oz...which her daddy guessed exactly right when Dr. Trinh said to guess! But that to say, she was a big girl to get out! I must say, the pushing was a bit worse than I had anticipated..I tore pretty badly along with an episiotomy. I pushed for a little over an hour, which they tell me is very good for a first baby with an epidural. I let the epidural wear off as I started pushing, so I felt those last contractions very much! It helped me do a better job pushing, though... And then!! When you think you can't take it anymore...you hear your wonderful tiny daughter cry, and nothing else matters! :) What an amazing feeling it was to see my baby for the first time! Words just cannot express it! God is so good...Dave and I are so very blessed! We love our little girl more than we could have imagined possible. :)

The Day Before...

Here I am on Friday at West of Paris, holding my little nephew Etienne...it was the first time I'd met him! Suzanne is here till the 5th, and it's been SO wonderful to see her again--I miss my big sis being around! :( It was so much fun to meet Etienne...he is one of the most unusually beautiful babies I've ever seen!
Dave came with me and we had lunch with Suz, Etienne, Val, and Mommy and Daddy--I think it was the yummy French food that made Shannon anxious to be in this world! :) Little did I know that my water's would break during the night...more on that above...

37 Weeks Today!

Well today is a significant milestone--Shannon is now considered "term"! Yay! Any time she wants to come now is just fine with me! We've had 4 false labors so far--we only were at the birth center the first time though, as the labor came on during a routine weekly non-stress test. We live 2 minutes away from the hospital/birth center, so we can afford to wait till we really think "this is it"! :)

I just can't wait to meet our little girl! I wonder how big she actually will be, and whom she will look most like...will she have Dave's long and narrow feet, or my wider feet? Will she have a Beauchamp or Foucachon nose? Eyes?? Mouth??

I really did think last night was "it"! The contractions were getting pretty painful--I had to just concentrate on relaxing and letting the pain go and breathing calmly; (plus they were a couple minutes apart)...it's hard to gauge pain you've never felt before...but still, I think I will "know" when it's the real thing!

Shannon's nursery is all set! And I got a little pink baby bunting for half price at Macy's yesterday so she won't get cold coming home. It's been COLD here lately! 21 degrees was a high!

I also finally went and bought a Boppy nursing pillow. I splurged and got the "luxe pink" slipcover for a few dollars more--it's a soft velour stretchy fabric. I can already tell it's going to be a life saver with nursing!

35 1/2 Weeks!

Well, it seems Shannon is one big baby! Her head and legs are measuring 2 weeks ahead, but her abdomen is measuring 4 weeks ahead!! The ultrasound tech said they can be a pound off either way, but that this machine was pretty accurate, plus she got really clear measurements of everything. So it seems I'm measuring even further along than I thought!

I am now at the safe mark--35 weeks! My doctor wants me to keep taking the Terbutaline (muscle relaxant to keep contractions down) till 36 weeks...and then...just wait and see what happens! :)

I'm actually about to go to my 3rd ultrasound appointment...

Gettin' There!

Hello All!
Well, I am DEFINITELY feeling very pregnant now! This pic was taken about a month ago...So by now I'm feeling even more so. :) Shannon is kicking and moving SO much...sometimes it even hurts! I have most of the nursery ready. We painted the walls Pottery Barn's "Grecian Green" color, with a wide warm pink band at the top of the wall, which will be finished off with a scallop stencil.

The sleigh crib is rubbed ebony-colored wood, as is the dresser--we just used the tall, narrow dresser that goes with our bedroom set, since it won't fit into our bedroom with both our bed and big mirrored dresser. I inherited a changing table from my sister-in-law Kristin, who inherited it from Bekah Merkle. It is nice and big, and with a couple extra screws will be sturdy as can be. I spray-painted it a semi-flat black, and it looks great with the other furniture! Thank you Kristin! :)

I opted for the cheapest type of rocking bassinet (other than a moses basket or the plastic kind with music, etc..) I found it on WalMart.com and got free shipping to our local store. It is so-so...definitely cheap...:) You usually do get what you pay for! :) I think maybe for the next one around I'll watch Ebay early on to find a Pottery Barn bassinet that is shippable, and not just "local pickup only"...I often found "just the right crib" or "just the right bassinet" in my price range only to find they wouldn't ship! Argh! :) We are thinking of carpeting Shannon's room since it's the chilliest room in the house. It will be a shame to cover up the beautiful job Dave did with the fir flooring, but better warm than pretty for baby's room! I found a stuffed chair rocker on Craigslist for $15, and it is nice and small and comfy. I was so excited, as I had basically given up on finding a plush rocker (I don't like "gliders"--they make me dizzy) before baby came.

We found the perfect Christmas tree, and have it all decorated--it is a teeny bit sparsely decorated, but not bad for our first Christmas! :) I found us two fun and pretty stockings at Old Navy for half price. It's a Girl!!

Yay, yay, and hooray! We are having a little girl! The ultrasound technician was positive, too. She got at least 3 clear views. We are so excited!
I have a name I love, but we're still not totally decided yet. I haven't posted in a while, but I'm all past the sickies, and over half way to D-Day! :D

I feel a whole lot of kicking these days! It's such an amazing sensation, and strange and wonderful thought to think that there is a very much alive and kicking baby inside me! There really is so much more of a connection when you feel that.

The "Un-Fun" Part Of Pregnancy Hits...

I'm 6 weeks...and I feel pretty awful. Haven't thrown up, though, which is a relief. Hardly any food sounds appealing, and when I do eat, I get disgusted with that particular food! I get bad stomachaches too. Ah well! It is all very worth it in the end. We can't wait to find out if we're having a boy or girl! I will be delighted with either--I'm thrilled to be having a baby, period! It would be special to have a girl, as it would be the first on both sides of the family (unless my sister-in-law Kristin ends up having a girl...she's a month ahead of me). But it would also be special for Dave to have a son. So, like I said, either one will have us just as pleased as pie! :)

I have tried ginger, "Preggie Pops", salt and vinegar chips, lime or lemon popsicles...A pretty good one is ginger beer. It's strong, but it will help your stomach. Today though, nothing has helped. I think maybe I am just "sick" sick.

Hip, Hip, Hooray!

Dave and I were married nearly 3 months ago, but it seems like much longer! In a good way, that is...:) This is us on our honeymoon on the California Coast (Cambria). Here we are on a day trip to San Luis Obispo--a very fun town!

As the name of this blog indicates, we are very happy to announce that we will be welcoming a new Little Beauchamp in about 8 months! Yay! :D We are both thrilled, as are both sets of our parents. :)
